Can Cashmere Go in the Washing Machine? Our Advice.

Can Cashmere Go in the Washing Machine? Our Advice.

Introduction: The Dilemma of Washing Cashmere

Cashmere is a luxurious and delicate fabric that requires careful handling. Many people wonder if it's safe to wash cashmere in a washing machine or if hand washing is the only option. This blog post explores the best practices for washing cashmere, helping you maintain its softness and longevity.

Understanding Cashmere's Delicacy

What Makes Cashmere So Special?

Cashmere is made from the fine undercoat of cashmere goats, resulting in a soft, lightweight, and warm fabric. Its delicate fibres can be easily damaged if not treated properly, which is why many hesitate to machine wash it.

Our cashmere is sourced from Mongolia, where temperatures in winter can drop to minus 40 degrees, creating a thick and lustrous undercoat.  In the spring the undercoat is combed off the goats and graded, cleaned and spun to make the finest Grade A Mongolian cashmere we use in our knitwear.

The Risks of Machine-Washing Cashmere

Machine washing can cause cashmere to lose its shape, shrink, or become damaged due to agitation and high water temperatures. Understanding these risks is crucial before deciding whether to use a washing machine.

Can You Machine Wash Cashmere?

Factors to Consider

Machine Type: Front-load machines are gentler than top-load machines with an agitator.

Wash Cycle: Delicate or wool cycles with slow spin speeds are preferred.

Water Temperature: Cool water is essential to prevent shrinking and maintaining fabric integrity.

Detergent Use a mild, wool-safe detergent designed for delicate fabrics.

Whilst we don't recommended machine washing for our cashmere here are our tips if you choose to do so:

1.Use a Laundry Bag: Place the cashmere item in a mesh laundry bag to reduce friction and protect it from snags.

2.Select the Right Cycle: Choose the delicate or wool cycle, ensuring it's a short and gentle wash.

3.Avoid Fabric Softeners: These can coat the fibres and reduce softness; instead, stick to a specialized wool detergent.

4. Low Spin Speed: Opt for a low spin speed to minimize stretching.

5.Air Drying: Lay the item flat on a clean towel to dry, reshaping it as needed.

Alternatives to Machine Washing

Hand Washing: The Traditional Method

Hand washing is the safest way to clean cashmere and the method we recommend. Use lukewarm water and a gentle detergent, soaking the item for about 10 minutes before rinsing, removing excess water, the easiest way to do this is lay flat in a towel and roll or press the water out of the garment and drying flat.

Professional Dry Cleaning

For those who prefer professional care, dry cleaning is an option. Ensure the dry cleaner is experienced with delicate fabrics like cashmere to avoid damage.

Maintaining Cashmere Between Washes

Spot Cleaning and Freshening Up

To minimize the need for full washes, spot clean any stains with a damp cloth and a small amount of detergent. Hanging cashmere in a steamy bathroom can also help freshen it up between wears.

Proper Storage Techniques

Store cashmere folded in a drawer or on a shelf rather than hanging it to prevent stretching. Use breathable storage bags to keep moths away and also protect cashmere when travelling.

Conclusion: Is Machine Washing Cashmere Worth the Risk?

While machine washing cashmere can be done with caution, it is not without risks. For the best results, we recommend hand washing as the safest method.

Final Tips for Caring for Cashmere

Rotate Wear: Give your cashmere items a break between wears to prevent overuse.

Use a Cashmere Comb: Remove any pills that form to keep the fabric smooth.

Store Properly: Always store cashmere in a storage bag to avoid attracting pests.

By following these tips and guidelines, you can enjoy the luxury of cashmere without worrying about its care.
